Olympic National Park Trip

Visit 2, Day 1

Deception Pass

We drove from Bellingham out to Whidbey Island as our first stop on the way to the Olympic Peninsula. Our ferry (which needs a reservation if you're driving) wasn't until 6PM, so we had the whole day to explore.

Shockingly, I didn't manage to get any pictures of the bridge from the mainland over to Whidbey Island. But I did snap one of Mt Baker from the bridge

Ebey's Landing

Next we hiked up part of the Ebey's Landing trail. We parked down by the beach, and walked up the bluff.

I had been here before, but a first for me was seeing the sand wasps along the trail. They were friendly -- or at least didn't bother us -- and we got to watch them dig some holes in the sand which was pretty cool.

Fort Casey

Showed our relatives around the fort. This fort still has some of the weaponry there on display. We saw a giant cannon, and a smaller presumably faster big gunner as well.

These are fun to explore, they have dark rooms whose lights don't work any more, so they can be a bit spooky. Some folks were flying kites.

I didn't get any pictures of the fort other than from the ferry. It's interesting how you can't see the fort much at all from the water (that's the whole point I suppose)

Ferry

Ate a snack at happy hour at 'Callens' while we waited for the ferry to arrive. Saw this huge kingfisher sitting outside
